Question 88: Assalamualaikum Sheikh. May Allah reward you and your family abundantly.
I have a question. Eid falls on a Friday. What are tue rulings if one chooses to pray one and not the other?

Answer: Walaikumussalam Brother,

Instead of something from me, let me simply relate what one of the greatest scholars of fiqh of our time said in a fatwa of his with its link below.

[1]
Sh Ibn Baz mentioned that both the Eid prayer and Friday prayer are obligatory to be conducted by the Imam. As for an individual who attended the Eid prayer during early morning, is not the Imam, and the happens to be Friday, then that individual does not have to attend the Friday prayer but attending is more complete and proper. And if he did not attend the Jumuah prayer that day after having prayed the Eid prayer, then Sh Ibn Baz wrote that he can offer the Dhuhr prayer alone or in a congregation. This is because of a hadith from the life of the Prophet Muhammed (s.a.w), please find it a little later towards the end.

[2]
For your knowledge, scholars said there is a 2nd saying among scholars that after the Eid prayer the Friday prayer is still compulsory. This is said to be the Madhhab of Imam Abu Hanifah.

[3]
A 3rd saying of the scholars is that attending Friday prayer is compulsory even if one attended the Eid prayer except for distant dwellers in small towns or nomads so they are not obliged to attend the Friday prayer if they attended the Eid prayer already on the same day. This saying of complulsory for everyone except another distant town resident is the saying of Imam Shafi’ee.

Out of these, the first saying mentioned above, that Jumuah is not compulsory upon those who attended Eid prayer on the same day this is supported by the apparent meaning of the hadith:

عن ابن عباس عن النبي صلى اللهوعليه وسلم أنه قال: اجتمعَ عيدانِ في يومِكم هذا فمن شاءَ أجزأَهُ منَ الجمعةِ وإنَّا مجمِّعونَ إن شاءَ اللَّهُ

أخرجه ابن ماجه في سننه وصححه الألباني.

The Prophet (s a.w) said, “Two Eids have come together on this day of yours, so whoever wants to, it (ie Eid prayer) will suffice him instead of the Friday prayer. And we are going to do the Friday prayer Allah willing.”

This hadith lends the most support to the saying of Imam Ahmed ibn Hanbal that for those who prayed Eid, they do not need attend the Friday prayer if it is the Friday.

Allah knows best
