What is the ruling on traveling in Ramadan?

Question 4 : Assalamualaykum warahmatullah

Jazaakumullahu khaira for this platform.

I have a question InshaAllah. What is the ruling on traveling in Ramadan? If the flight leaves the city at 5 pm and maghreb is at 7 pm, must one fast that day and break the fast in the plane or can one decide to not fast even if most of the day will be spent not travelling?

Answer:  وعليكم السلام ورحمة الله وبركاته

If a resident is travelling during Ramadan fast, then the practice reported by some Sahabah (r.a) is to start the day fasting – as a Ramadan obligatory duty compulsory upon them – and then later in the day they have the option to break the fast once the person is truly moving on the journey having passed the border of the city below where the dwelling end. Of course, instead of that, if the person wants, they don’t need to break fast on the journey. Instead they can break fast at the proper Iftar time, which is when you see out the airplane window that the sun has set. The important thing though is to start the day fasting up to leaving the borders of the city.
